Winograd K-8 is named in honor of Harold S. Winograd, a local philanthropist, business owner and resident of Greeley who served on the Board of Education from 1955 to 1961.

Harold S. Winograd 1921-1999

Harold Sydney Winograd was a man who loved to give – of his time, his resources, and his life. About giving he would often say, “It’s just the right thing to do.”

Harold learned about the benefits of giving when he was a boy growing up in Greeley. “My father would send money to our relatives who were starving in Poland. He would say, ‘As long as we have bread, we will send bread to them. We won’t have cake until they have bread.’”

 

Harold started elementary school at the East Ward School (now Sunrise Community Health Center), graduated from Greeley (Central) High School, went on to receive his degree in engineering from the University of Colorado, and eventually joined the Navy. While stationed in Washington, D. C., he met his wife-to-be, Florence. In 1946, they moved to Greeley and Harold joined the family business, Winograd’s Steel and Supply. Using his engineering background and his natural ability to discern favorable business agreements, Harold developed Winograd’s Steel into one of the most successful steel supply companies in northern Colorado.

 

Despite his busy work schedule, Harold did not forget his civic responsibilities. He served on the boards of Weld County School District Six, North Colorado Medical Center, the University of Northern Colorado Foundation and the Chamber of Commerce among others.

 

Faith and family; however, were valued most by Harold. He and Florence took their faith seriously and lived their lives accordingly.

 

Harold also knew the value of an education. In fact, all four sons distinguished themselves by receiving prestigious Boettcher college scholarships, an unprecedented achievement for a single family. The Winograds subsequently went on to endow many college scholarships and underwrote various college programs and projects.

 

Harold’s generous gifts were not limited to higher education. He contributed to a myriad of worthwhile causes through the Winograd Foundation which he established. It’s safe to say, and confirmed by respected community members, that Harold was one of the most generous individuals in the region.

 

Harold Winograd passed away in December, 1999, but the love he showed for his fellow man continues to manifest itself today through the gifts he gave.  If only we could all live a life worthy of one of Harold’s favorite precepts: “Don’t give until it hurts, give until it feels good.”
